Gum Recession

What Causes Gum Recession?

Gum recession is a phenomenon in which the gum tissue loses its natural defense against both bacterial penetration and trauma and causes your tooth to appear longer.

In addition, gum recession often results in tooth root sensitivity to hot and cold foods. If not properly cleaned frequently, the reseeding area may progress and eventually lead to tooth loss.

The gum recession can be caused by various factors such as:

  • Gum Disease
  • Genetics
  • Aggressive tooth brushing
  • Insufficient oral hygiene
  • Hormonal changes
  • Tobacco products
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Lip or tongue piercing

What to Expect?

The success of root coverage is dependent on the severity of the disease and amount of bone loss.  This procedure will predictably produce a healthy band of attached gingiva and will stop the progression of the disease.
